“This program makes me realize that I have to be involved in my government.”
–Student Participant from the 2008 Constitutional Academy

Every teacher wants to hear that they helped encourage a student’s enthusiasm for learning; every teacher wants to hear that they helped prepare a student for greater intellectual challenges; every teacher wants to hear that they helped make a difference in a student’s life. The Constitutional Academy, developed and conducted by the Bill of Rights Institute, is a program designed to encourage your student’s enthusiasm for learning, to prepare your student for the intellectual challenge of a college education, and to be relevant to your student’s life as a citizen.

If you have a student (or students) whom you think would benefit from an interactive, intellectually rigorous and academically stimulating six-week long distance learning program which culminates in a week-long residential program that will prepare your students for their college career, please consider recommending the Constitutional Academy to them.

Selected students will have the opportunity to study the principles of the American Constitution as they were debated by Americans of the Founding generation and as they are debated today. Constitutional Academy students will be guided in their exploration by a distinguished faculty of college professors, and accompanied by other bright and talented students. Students who successfully complete this rigorous program will earn three units of undergraduate college credit from Ashland University. For more information about Ashland, click here.

Accepted students will receive their course packet and begin the distance learning portion of the Constitutional Academy in June. The residential portion will be held this summer July 18-24, 2010 and July 25-31, 2010 in Arlington, Virginia, across the river from Washington, D.C. Outstanding high school juniors and seniors selected for the program will:

  • Work with historical documents at the National Archives
  • Visit local sites of constitutional significance, such as Mt. Vernon and Monticello
  • Discuss contemporary issues with their peers
  • Enjoy lectures by accomplished scholars from prestigious universities
  • Enjoy an evening guided tour of Washington, D.C.
  • Engage in weekly online reading discussions
  • AND make lasting friendships with other students across the country.

This is a college-level experience, and all participants are expected to complete all course requirements, including pre-class assignments of approximately 250 pages of reading and participation in online discussions, in-class assignments, and a final research paper following the conclusion of the residential portion of the program. All students who successfully complete these requirements will receive three units of undergraduate credit to be applied to the institution of their choice.
