Program Activities

Learning in the classroom

Each day in the life of our Constitutional Academy is organized around classroom seminars and discussions.

Expert constitutional scholars lead students through lectures and discussions about the critical principles of American political institutions.

Students have the opportunity to explore issues in greater depth with our distinguished faculty both during classroom sessions and in informal discussions.

Learning outside the classroom

The Constitutional Academy includes several opportunities for students to learn about the people who made the American Constitution possible. Experts at Mount Vernon and Monticello help students understand men like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, and the age that shaped them.

Curators at the National Archives lead students through exercises designed to encourage a deeper understanding of the Constitution’s origins and constitutional principles.

Learning with new friends

During the week, students will have countless opportunities to cultivate new friendships with fellow students from all around the country.

Group projects reinforce concepts from lectures, discussions, and off-site learning activities; they help students learn to communicate complex ideas to one another; and they foster friendships that we hope will last long after the Constitutional Academy program is over.

“I really enjoyed the discussion we had about past Supreme Court cases… the trial simulation was a great deal of fun…As a result of the Academy, I am now considering majoring in government or political science for college.”
